Utpal Dutt was born on March 29, 1929, in Barisal, Bengal Presidency, British India (now Bangladesh). He was a prominent Indian actor, director, and playwright known for his significant contributions to Bengali theatre and cinema. Dutt was a pioneering figure in modern Indian theatre, founding the "Little Theatre Group" in 1949, which focused on political and radical themes. He became renowned for his Marxist ideologies expressed through his plays, such as Kallol and Louha Manob. Dutt's film career spanned over four decades, during which he acted in approximately 200 films, including notable works like Bhuvan Shome and Agantuk. He was married to actress Shobha Sen in 1960, and they had one daughter, Bishnupriya Dutt, who is a professor of Theatre & Performance studies. Dutt's legacy includes his influence on the Group Theatre movement and his commitment to revolutionary theatre, which often led to his arrest due to the political content of his work. He passed away on August 19, 1993, in Kolkata, India.
