She hails from a family steeped in the performing arts; her mother was the esteemed actress Dina Pathak, and her sister is actress Supriya Pathak. Ratna Pathak graduated from the National School of Drama in 1981 and made her film debut in Shyam Benegal's "Mandi" (1983). She gained widespread fame for her role as Maya Sarabhai in the popular sitcom "Sarabhai vs Sarabhai" (2004-2006).
