Rajit Kapur was born on May 22, 1963, in Amritsar, Punjab, India. He is currently unmarried and has no children. Standing at a height of approximately 5 feet 8 inches (173 cm), he comes from a Punjabi family that moved to Mumbai when he was a child. Kapur pursued his education at Sydenham College, where he earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree.

Rajit Kapur is an accomplished Indian film, theatre, and television actor known for his versatile performances. He gained prominence for his portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi in the film "The Making of the Mahatma" (1996), which earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor. His career began in theatre, where he became a member of the Chingari group and later honed his skills at the National School of Drama. His film debut came with "Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda" (1992), directed by Shyam Benegal. Kapur is also well-known for his role as Byomkesh Bakshi in the television series of the same name, which aired on Doordarshan in the early 1990s. Over the years, he has appeared in various successful films such as "Dil Chahta Hai" (2001), "Agnisakshi" (1999), and more recently in "Mission Majnu" (2023) and "Mujib: The Making of a Nation" (2023). His contributions to theatre include directing and acting in numerous plays, including the long-running "Love Letters."
