Nirupa Roy, born Kokila Kishorechandra Bulsara on January 4, 1931, in Valsad, Gujarat, was a prominent Indian actress known for her powerful portrayals of motherly roles in Hindi cinema. She married Kamal Roy at the age of 15 and moved to Mumbai, where she began her film career shortly thereafter. Roy's acting debut was in the Gujarati film "Ranakdevi" in 1946, followed by her first Hindi film "Amar Raj." Over her extensive career spanning more than six decades, she appeared in over 250 films and became a household name, often referred to as the "Queen of Misery" due to her frequent roles in tragic narratives. She won three Filmfare Awards and received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. Roy was known for her strong screen presence and ability to evoke deep emotions, particularly in films featuring Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor. She passed away on October 13, 2004, due to cardiac arrest, leaving behind a legacy as one of Bollywood's most beloved actresses.
