Moushumi Chatterjee, born Indira Chattopadhyaya on April 26, 1948, in Calcutta, India, is a prominent Indian actress known for her work in both Hindi and Bengali cinema. She comes from a Bengali Brahmin family; her father, Prantosh Chattopadhyaya, served in the Indian Army. Moushumi began her acting career at a young age, debuting as a child actress in the Bengali film "Balika Badhu" (1967). She married Jayanta Mukherjee, the son of renowned music composer Hemant Kumar, at the age of 15. The couple has two daughters, Payal and Megha. Tragically, her elder daughter Payal passed away in December 2019 after battling type 1 diabetes. Moushumi has also ventured into politics, joining the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2019 after previously contesting elections as a candidate for the Indian National Congress in 2004.
