He was deeply involved with the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA), contributing significantly to both cinema and theater from the late 1950s until the 1970s. Mukherjee worked alongside renowned directors such as Ritwik Ghatak and Mrinal Sen, showcasing his versatility and talent in various roles. He directed notable films, including "Achena Atithi" in 1973, which was later remade in Hindi as "Anjane Mehmaan" in 1975. Throughout his career, he founded the Mass Theatres group in Kolkata, further enriching the cultural landscape of Bengali theater.
