He gained prominence with films like Ajji, Oonga, and Bhonsle, which showcase his unique storytelling abilities and artistic vision. Makhija's early life in Kolkata shaped his narrative style, as he transitioned from a background in economics to the vibrant world of filmmaking in Mumbai. He began his career as an assistant director on notable projects such as Black Friday and Bunty Aur Babli, which laid a solid foundation for his future endeavors. His directorial debut with Oonga received critical acclaim, premiering at the New York Indian Film Festival.
