Avinash Das

Avinash Das was born on April 19, 1979, in Jamui, Bihar, India. A journalist-turned-filmmaker, he pursued a degree in journalism from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, before working with media organizations like NDTV and BBC. Transitioning to cinema, he became a prominent voice in India’s new wave of independent films. Das is married to Preeti Singh, a theater artist, and the couple has one child. His work often explores themes of gender, sexuality, and societal marginalization, blending realism with provocative storytelling.  

Das made his directorial debut with Anaarkali of Aarah (2017), a critically acclaimed drama starring Swara Bhasker as a feisty folk dancer battling patriarchy. The film premiered at the Busan International Film Festival. He later directed the Netflix series She (2020), a gritty exploration of a constable’s double life, and the ZEE5 film *Main Mai* (2023), focusing on motherhood and identity. His projects are noted for strong female protagonists and socio-political commentary. Das continues to challenge norms through his narratives, contributing to contemporary Indian cinema’s evolving landscape.
