Asit Sen was an influential Indian film director, cinematographer, and screenwriter, born on September 24, 1922, in Dhaka, which was then part of British India and is now in Bangladesh. He had a profound impact on both Bengali and Hindi cinema, directing numerous acclaimed films throughout his career. Sen's early interest in art led him to Kolkata for further studies after his schooling in Nagaon, Assam. He began his career in the film industry as an assistant to his uncle, an established cinematographer. His directorial debut came with the Assamese film "Biplabi" in 1948, followed by his first Bengali film "Chalachal" in 1956. Notable works include "Deep Jweley Jai" (1959) and "Uttar Falguni" (1963) in Bengali, and "Mamta" (1966), "Khamoshi" (1969), and "Safar" (1970) in Hindi. His films often explored complex themes and featured prominent actors of the time. Asit Sen was married to actress Suchitra Sen, and they had a daughter named Rupa. He continued to contribute to film education until his death on August 25, 2001.
