He hails from an Assamese Muslim family and is the youngest of seven siblings. His father was a headmaster, and his family has a rich educational background. Adil pursued a degree in philosophy from B. Borooah College in Guwahati before attending the National School of Drama in Delhi. He also studied at the Drama Studio London on a scholarship. Adil married Kristen Jain in 2007 after an incident during a performance of Othello at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 1999 brought them together.
